The Healthy Preschool Project is a study of brain development in children ages 4 to 7 who experienced pre-natal exposure to opioids. This research is funded by the National institutes of Healthβs Helping to End Addiction Long-Term Initiative (HEAL), an initiative aimed at improving prevention and treatment for opioid use. More specifically, a priority of this program is to address the needs of children and infants affected by the opioid crisis. Despite increased opioid-usage during pregnancy, not enough is known about how exposure to opioids in utero affects the developing brain or even the physical, social, and academic impacts when entering school.
